burke lake park

on saturday afternoon, in the greatest weather since we've moved here, we met some friends at burke lake, just down the road from us.
there's a little jungle gym nestled in what seems like the middle of the woods. that's how everything feels here. 2.5 seconds out of the city & you'd swear you were in the rural backcountry. it is so densely filled with these gigantic trees, there's not a building in sight. that right there has to be my favorite part of the dc area.
none of the adults could really figure out what these 2 slopping poles were meant for but miss e adores having daddy around to play.
cossette was a little too good at climbing up the slide,
jellybean wanted to be held up to the monkey bars,
& as always cossette just wanted to keep up.
ellery is not a shy thing. she promptly introduces herself, her age, & her sister's age (the 3 questions she consistently is asked) & then calls to mom that she has a new friend. austin took this picture after her little buddy swung around & accidentally kicked ellery square in the gut, flinging her onto her butt. she cried, looked for us, then rubbed her owies & said "all better!".
then started laughing hysterically again. like, hysterically.
...
we were serenaded the whole time by a charming picnic wedding, in true 1940's jazz fashion. the band was awesome, especially the guy on bass!
we didn't realize until we went exploring that burke lake was roughly 100 yards from the play area. there were so many trees we literally didn't see the water til we were right on the shore.
it was sooo gorgeous!!
i love changing leaves, even if it is a little early in the season for everything to be changing.
we followed this bird for a bit but it was spending more time under the water than on top so it took an attempt or 2 to get a good picture of him.
seriously?! incredible!
hiking around the peninsula
& throwing rocks in the lake.
autumn makes me smile. cossette wasn't as easily impressed but she does love love love the outdoors.
...
they'd live outside if i'd let them. lame mommy just won't have it.

What amazing places we are living right now, huh? we're so lucky! Look at Coco climbing up that slide! She has changed a lot already! Ellery is such a funny girl- I love the story about the kid kicking her in the gut and her just giggling. What a champ. Love you guys!
